Shopify → Google Merchant Center setup, without the rejections

Shopify makes it easy to push products to Google Merchant Center — and easy to push the wrong things. This page walks through how to connect Shopify properly, prepare the right product fields, and scan your store for issues before reviewers see it.

The two ways Shopify connects to Merchant Center

There are two supported paths from Shopify to GMC, and which one you pick changes what you need to prepare:

  • Google & YouTube channel (native Shopify app) — easiest. Shopify pushes products + shipping + tax to GMC automatically. Best for most stores.
  • Manual feed — a third-party feed app or a generated CSV/XML uploaded to GMC. More control, more risk of mismatches.

What to prepare BEFORE installing the Google & YouTube app

  1. Policy pages live and complete — Refund, Shipping, Privacy, Terms. Shopify's defaults are not enough; reviewers want specific timeframes and country-level shipping details.
  2. Contact info matching across pages — phone, address, email visible on every page (footer is fine).
  3. Shipping zones match what your policy promises — this single mismatch causes a large share of misrepresentation flags.
  4. Product titles, images, prices clean — no stock photos labelled as "your product", no keyword stuffing in titles.
  5. No password page — remove the storefront password before submitting.

Installing the Google & YouTube channel

In Shopify admin: Settings → Apps and sales channels → Add app → Google & YouTube. Sign in with the Google account you want to own Merchant Center. Shopify will:

  • Create or link an existing Merchant Center account
  • Verify your storefront URL (using your Search Console connection where possible)
  • Map your products to Google product categories
  • Sync inventory, prices, and shipping settings from Shopify into the feed

What Shopify can't fix for you

The Google & YouTube app handles the technical sync, but it can't make weak policy pages stronger or fix mismatched contact info across your store. The most common rejections on Shopify stores are:

  • Generic refund policy ("contact us for returns")
  • Free Shopify template pages with TODO placeholders left in
  • No phone number on the contact page
  • Business name in Shopify settings differs from the storefront / WHOIS
  • Stock-photo About page
  • Shipping policy promises faster delivery than Merchant Center shipping settings allow
